Development of a Digitalization Strategy – Vision, Goals, and Operationalization
The internationally operating client has historically grown from manufacturing and service-driven business units that operated largely independently – with isolated, uncoordinated digitalization activities.
In tightly scheduled workshops with experts from all business units, we developed a strategic current-state and target-state vision, integrated all ongoing and planned activities, and prepared the strategy with increasing detail in a stakeholder-appropriate manner up to approval by the supervisory board.
Challenge
Initial situation: Internationally operating client with a historically grown structure of manufacturing and service-driven business units.
Problem: Independently operating business units, isolated uncoordinated digitalization activities.
Need: Need for an overarching, future-proof digitalization strategy to be approved by the supervisory board within two months.
Approach
1
Assessment of initial situation, identification of stakeholders, and development of approach
2
Conducting tightly scheduled workshops with experts across all business units
3
Development of a strategic current-state and target-state vision including integration of all ongoing and planned activities
4
Stakeholder-appropriate development of the strategy (supervisory board / executive board / department heads) with increasing detail
5
Development of detailed implementation roadmaps
Result
Cross-business-unit and cross-departmental digitalization strategy
Approval of the digitalization strategy by the supervisory board
Developed and aligned roadmap for implementation and operationalization of individual strategic thrusts
"For the first time, I have the feeling that we are approaching and implementing the topic of digitalization in a structured manner."
Areas of Application
This approach is suitable for internationally operating companies with historically grown, decentralized structures in which digitalization activities have previously run uncoordinated alongside one another. It is relevant whenever an overarching strategy must be developed under high time pressure and approved at the supervisory board or executive board level.
